57th Polish Scholarship Festival Wrap up

The Fifty-seventh annual Polish Scholarship Festival came to an end Sunday, June 12, 2011 with the sounds of The Knewz from Buffalo, New York. Besides this Grammy-nominated band, the talented Lechowia Dance Company entertained the large crowd with their lively dances and colorful costumes. Sunday also brought the awarding of ten scholarships to deserving students of Polish descent from the central New York area and the crowning of Amanda Mozdzen as Miss Polonia, 2011.

Saturday we heard the sounds of Syracuse’s own Jasiu Klocek with the Salt City Brass and Sammy winner, Ashley Cox. The highlight of the Festival, eighteen Grammy-winner, Jimmy Sturr and his orchestra, played for the enthusiastic audience. The Reverend Thomas Kobuszewski was named the 2011 “Pole of the Year.”

The Festival began on Friday, June 10 at noon with the raising of the Polish flag at Syracuse’s City Hall. Entertainment started at 4 o’clock with the sounds of Fritz’s Polka Band and John Gora I Gorale out of Burlington Ontario. Al Piatkowski, winner of eight Grammy awards, mesmerized the crowd while playing his accordion.

Many thanks go out to the sponsors of the Festival, including Stawski Distributing, Stawski Imports , Hollis Funeral Home, Dazzling Diamonds Jewelry and Gems, The Pennysaver and YNN TV that helped make the weekend a success!
